{"id":44,"date":"2011-06-19T21:07:01","date_gmt":"2011-06-19T21:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/?p=44"},"modified":"2013-11-26T21:07:38","modified_gmt":"2013-11-26T21:07:38","slug":"vermilion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/2011\/06\/vermilion\/","title":{"rendered":"Vermilion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>6\/19\/2011 : Vermilion, Ohio : Coordinates N 41.425288\u00a0 W 82.362378<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0515.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46\" title=\"The Vermilion River\" alt=\"DSC_0515\" src=\"http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0515-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0515-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0515-1024x685.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/nauticalendeavors.com\/islandbound\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0515-624x417.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-46\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Vermilion River viewed from McGarvey&#8217;s Landing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Vermilion is one of our favorite places to visit on Lake Erie.\u00a0 It is very picturesque, has good docking facilities, good protection from the weather, and many shopping and eating options within walking distance.<\/p>\n<p>The town has maintained its charm and leveraged the waterfront along the Vermilion River and Lake Erie.\u00a0 In the early 1900s it was one of the only ports along the lake that catered to pleasure craft.\u00a0 Today there are 3 primary options for transient docking:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Water Works public docks, McGarvey\u2019s Landing (both maintained and managed by the Vermilion Port Authority), and the Vermilion Yacht Club.<\/p>\n<p>As you enter the river from the lake, on the left will be a series of canals lined with homes.\u00a0 This area is called the Lagoons.\u00a0 Prior to 1928 this area was a wide beach and marshland.\u00a0 The area was dredged and lots were plotted to develop a summer home community.\u00a0 Most if not all of the homes are a cape cod architecture and have water frontage with private docks.\u00a0 Along the second canal is the Vermilion Yacht Club.\u00a0 The yacht club has excellent facilities and it is a very quiet place to dock your boat.\u00a0 The Lagoons has an excellent beach area that is arguably one of the best on Lake Erie.\u00a0 Nice sand, well maintained and very broad.<\/p>\n<p>It is an easy walk to town center or to the commercial area east of downtown.\u00a0 There are many restaurants within walking distance, including one of our favorite restaurants \u2013 Chez Francois.\u00a0 Chez is an upscale, gourmet restaurant right on the river.\u00a0 You can dine inside in a formal atmosphere or eat on the patio overlooking the water in a casual atmosphere.\u00a0 They also have an excellent bar called Touche which has its own menu, including many items that are also served in the restaurant.\u00a0 The food and atmosphere are fantastic!\u00a0 They have several docks that can be used while dining at no charge, so you can bring your boat or you can dinghy over from where you are docked.\u00a0 The Water Works Port Authority docks are adjacent to the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>McGarvey\u2019s Landing has dockage along the waterfront of Quaker Steak and Lube.\u00a0 It is a fun, casual restaurant that is known for their chicken wings.\u00a0 They have bands on the weekends and it gets pretty crowded.\u00a0 It can be noisy on the weekends but quiets down after 11 PM.\u00a0 It is fun to dock there and people watch.<\/p>\n<p>If you walk to the commercial area east of downtown, within 20 minutes you can find grocery stores, pharmacies, West Marine, fast food, various restaurants and a hardware store.<\/p>\n<p>From Memorial Day to Labor Day it is best to call ahead and reserve dockage as it gets very crowded.\u00a0 If you dock at McGarvey\u2019s Landing make sure you say hello to Sailor, the golden retriever of one of the dock masters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>6\/19\/2011 : Vermilion, Ohio : Coordinates N 41.425288\u00a0 W 82.362378 Vermilion is one of our favorite places to visit on Lake Erie.\u00a0 It is very picturesque, has good docking facilities, good protection from the weather, and many shopping and eating options within walking distance.
